Big city living! Where my big city people at??
All of the lights! All of the parties! All of the restaurants! All of the people!
But also, all of the traffic! All of the noise! All of the loud noise! All of the traffic and loud noise! Sometimes it seems kind of a hassle to live in a big city. Sometimes we need a little escape. As it turns out, The Hague happens to have plenty of those places.
On a random day, a lady friend and I decided to have some lunch. She suggested “The Kitchen”, a place nearby our Uni. This “Kitchen” place she suggested however was one I’d never heard of before.
Being my usual ‘cautious-of-trying-new-things-because-i’m-afraid-the-food-won’t-taste-good-and-my-day-will-be-ruined- and-I-will-never-forgive-this-person-for-it‘ self, I tried to suggest something else.
My friend was adamant about this place so I did what was ‘best’ and swallowed my pride, put my trust and my empty stomache in her hands and said “Sure, sounds totally great!”.
The street itself, was a street I hadn’t walked through for quite some time and had always associated with ‘shady people having shady conversations about even shadier activities’. As I was being dragg… I mean as we were walking to it I was pleasantly surprised! The neighborhood had changed quite a lot, looked fresh and clean with some new restaurants and hookah/Shisha lounges. As it turns out, ‘The Kitchen’ is the restaurant/hangout place of The Student Hotel The Hague.
Food/menu: The menu varies from different items for breakfast (Sunny-Sideup/Uitsmijters sandwiches) to lunch (soup/sandwiches) and dinner (burger/pizza/pasta). I decided to have the spicy pepperoni pizza and was not dissapointed. Offcourse I wanted it extra spicy with jalapenos, so after my mouth stopped burning after 2 minutes, I was able to taste the delicious homemade pizza with fresh ingredients. The fries tasted fresh as well and I became curious to trying other things on the menu.
Vibe: This was probably the best part. So seldomly I have been this surprised about the athmosphere of a place. It’s big but cozy and it’s perfect for the people who just want to chil and kind of want to get away from it all without having to go to another city. Also a great environment to study if you’re one of the people who doesn’t always want to feel they have to be exhiled to a library to get some work done.
Prices: Not bad at all. Prices for meals already start at €6.
Personnel: Very friendly.
Highlight: Hallway to the bathroom. “…say what?” no, I’m serious! You’re allowed to draw with crayon on the walls. This alone is worth a visit.
